Activity : How to Hear the Pulse
When you listen to a popular song, you can often find the pulse in the lower instruments of the song. Let's practice.
1. Gangnam Style by PSY
In this popular tune with the snazzy dance moves it’s easy to hear the synthesized pulse on beats 1-2-3-4.
2. We are Never Ever Getting Back Together by Taylor Swift
In this popular tune, the bass drum plays a steady slow pulse through most of the song at 86 BPM.
Note: BPM = Beats Per Minute.
60 BPM means 60 beats in each minute, or 1 beat per second.
3. La, La, La by Shakira
As you listen, close your eyes and try to hear the constant beat of the song. When you are ready, tap your toe to the pulse that you feel or lightly clap your hands on every beat.
4. Hungarian Dances by Brahms.
Now, find the pulse in this beautiful classical masterpiece. Pay attention, the pulse changes!!!

THE SWAN LAKE
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky was a famous Russian
composer. He wrote the music for Swan
Lake. One of the most beautiful parts of the ballet is the tune for Odette
and the Swans. You will hear it a lot in the ballet. Listen for it at the end
of Act 1 when Siegfried first sees.
THE COMPOSER'S CORNER
Johann Strauss and Johann Strauss Jr.
Johann Strauss father
Johann Strauss, Jr.
October 25, 1825 - June 03, 1899.
His father, also called Johann, was also a very famous composer, and is now known as Johann Strauss I (or Johann Strauss Sr) while his eldest son is called Johann Strauss II (or Johann Strauss Jr). Strauss became very famous for his waltzes. He was known as the “King of the Waltz”. His most famous one was called The Blue Danube).
Johann Strauss, Jr. was born in Vienna, where his father was an enormously famous musician. When the elder Strauss decided that Johann, Jr. should be a banker, his mother encouraged him to go into music.
When he was 19, Johann Strauss, Jr. started his own orchestra, and conducted his first public concert. Eventually, people began to realize that the younger Strauss was even better than his father.
Strauss toured internationally with his orchestra. And everywhere he went, he wrote new music dedicated to the places he visited. In addition to all the waltzes and marches he wrote, Johann Strauss, Jr. composed 16 operettas -- a very popular form of entertainment in his day.
